It will take 48 hours for the test report to come. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa scheduled an urgent meeting of the National Corona Virus Command Council (NCCC) on Saturday, amid growing global concern about the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus. This variant is likely to be more contagious. This meeting was earlier to be held on Sunday.The meeting comes amid travel restrictions imposed by several European countries after the UK on travel to and from South Africa and neighboring Namibia, Zimbabwe and Botswana as well as Lesotho and Eswatini.

Mauritius, the US, Israel, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands are among the new countries to impose sanctions. There is speculation that Ramaphosa will announce a strict lockdown and other measures to prevent the spread of the new variants. New variant B.1.1.1.529, first detected in South Africa this week, was on Friday designated as a ‘worrying variant’ by the World Health Organization (WHO) and named ‘Omicron’. South Africa first informed the WHO on 24 November and it has also been identified in Botswana, Belgium, Hong Kong and Israel.
