Arcturus: The new Covid variation Arcturus, or XBB.1.16 as it is known clinically, has been detected so far in 22 countries, including Singapore, Australia, the UK, and the US, prompting concern from the World Health Organisation (WHO). Health officials have reinstated stringent mask-wearing requirements due to the Covid subvariant’s sharp increase in infections.
New version may be 1.2 times more contagious than the Omicron form
The variant’s distribution has accelerated since it was initially discovered in January. As the global health organisation monitors the new strain, the variety has been labelled as concerning. A study from the University of Tokyo that was posted on the biology research website bioRxiv suggests that the new version may be 1.2 times more contagious than the Omicron form. Breathlessness, coughing, conjunctivitis, and, in certain cases, sticky eyes are the prominent symptoms.
