What is yellow fungus? All you need to know about

Amid the rising fear of black and white fungus among people, a person has now been diagnosed with a yellow fungus infection. In the national capital region (NCR), it has been witnessed first in Ghaziabad on Monday (May 24, 2021) and the yellow fungus is reportedly more dangerous than the black and white fungus.

Unlike the two other infections, yellow fungus starts off internally, causes pus leakage, slow healing of wounds, and, in serious cases, can also cause devastating symptoms such as organ failure and acute necrosis. Therefore, it remains critical that patients seek help for their infection as soon as they start observing symptoms.

The 45-year-old patient, resident of Sanjay Nagar in Harsh Hospital, Ghaziabad, is suffering from yellow fungus as well as black and white fungus.

Professor Tyagi said, “A patient came to me, who after the initial test appeared to be normal, but after doing another investigation, I came to know that the patient is suffering from black, white as well as yellow fungus.”

“This fungus is found in reptiles. I saw this disease for the first time. Amphotericin B injection is used to treat this disease. It takes a long time to heal. This patient’s condition cannot be said to be very good, he is still undergoing treatment.”

Symptoms:

*Lethargy, weight loss, low appetite, or no appetite at all.

*Leakage of pus from the wound.

*It also reportedly affects the healing process of wounds and slows it down.

*It also results in sunken eyes and organ failure and eventually leads to necrosis.

Yellow fungus cause:

Like most fungal infections, this is also primarily caused by unsanitary conditions, such as poor hygiene, contaminated food/ oxygen source. Overuse of steroids and antibacterial medications can also cause the disease. Patients who have comorbidities or are on immuno-suppressants may be at a greater risk of contracting the infection.

Yellow Fungus cure:

Yellow Fungus is treatable as is the case of the man who has been tested for the Yellow Fungus infection in Ghaziabad. Amphotericin B injection, a broad spectrum antifungal medicine, is said to be only available treatment for yellow fungus.

Meanwhile, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Monday said that so far, 5,424 cases of mucormycosis have been reported in 18 states and Union Territories, news agency ANI reports.

Several states and union territories in the country has declared black fungus as a notified disease under Epidemics Disease Act, stating that the infection is leading to prolonged morbidity and mortality among Covid-19 patients.
