The World Health Organization has issued an alert for Indian-made cough syrup sold in the Marshall Islands and Micronesia. WHO has said that the amount of Diethylene Glycol and Ethylene Glycol has been found in the syrup Guaifenesin made in India. In such a situation, there is a risk of serious diseases due to the use of this cough syrup. This is the third such alert within seven months for cough syrup made in India. Earlier in Gambia and Uzbekistan also, there were cases of death of children due to consumption of India’s cough syrup.
It has been said in the alert that in the quality check of Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration, syrup made in India has failed in sample test of Guaifenesin. The amount of diethylene glycol is much higher than the prescribed standard, which can damage the kidneys. The same diethylene glycol was also found in Indian syrup supplied to Gambia and Uzbekistan. It was alleged that 70 children in Gambia and 18 children in Uzbekistan had died due to kidney disease after drinking the syrup.
Order to stop supply
WHO has asked to stop the supply of this syrup and asked people not to use it. Also, manufacturers of syrups have also been asked to test raw materials used in syrups like Propylene Glycol, Sorbitol and Glycerin/Glycerol before using them in medical formulations.
The WHO has stated that consumption of these syrups can cause abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, mental status changes, inability to urinate, and severe kidney infection.
Cough syrup made in punjab
These cough syrups were manufactured by Punjab-based QP Pharmachem Limited and marketed by Haryana-based Trillium Pharma. WHO has said that till date neither the manufacturer nor the supplier has provided guarantee to WHO on the safety and quality of these cuffs. In the test of samples on Tuesday night, these cough syrups have not met the quality.
A few months ago, children died after drinking cough syrup in Gambia and Uzbekistan. Then it was alleged that this happened because of the cough syrup made in India. After this, India took action against the companies making cough syrup. Now this is the third such case.
