High Court appeals Madhya Pradesh: Accelerate hearing in Supreme Court plea on OBC quota increase

A division bench of the MP high court heard a number of petitions on Wednesday, both in favour of and against increasing the OBC quota in the state. The court ordered the state government to work to expeditiously hear three of the petitions, which are currently before the Supreme Court, and to provide a status report on those petitions at the next hearing of the case.

The Supreme Court’s bench of Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Virender Singh was informed of four petitions concerning the increase in the OBC quota for state government employment and admission to state-run educational institutions on Wednesday. An application to withdraw one of the petitions was also made.

In 2014, MP High Court rules Madhya Pradesh Government’s move to raise the OBC quota to 27% unlawful

In 2003, the state government increased the OBC quota to 27%, but in 2014, the MP High Court declared that the action was unlawful. Following that high court judgement, petitions that are currently pending in the Supreme Court were submitted.

On Wednesday, the court heard a number of petitions in favour of and against the state law that increased the OBC quota from 14% to 27%. The court was informed that four of the petitions are still pending before the Supreme Court and that an application to withdraw one of the petitions has also been made..

The state government should strive to have the issues heard quickly by the Supreme Court, the court instructed in its request for a progress update on the matters still waiting in the SC. The hearing for the matter will now take place on January 23.

The State Government and petitioners in favour of the quota increase were represented by special counsel Rameshwar P Singh, while those opposed to the change were represented by attorney Aditya Singh.
