IIT Hyderabad: With the testing of driverless, autonomous cars on the internal roads of IIT-Hyderabad, Hyderabad is making a groundbreaking move towards the future of automobiles. For the past two months, these driverless shuttle vehicles have been carrying students and faculty across the campus. These vehicles were created from the ground up at IIT’s TiHAN centre and are furnished with a variety of sensors and an autonomous navigation system based on LiDAR.
IIT Hyderabad employ a driverless shuttle on campus
At IIT‘s TiHAN centre, the nation’s first Autonomous Navigation Testbed (Aerial & Terrestrials) facility, the closed four-wheel electric car was created entirely from scratch. After testing for almost a year, two of these autonomous vehicles have already been deployed on campus.
Prof P Rajalakshmi, professor of electrical engineering at the institute and director of the TiHAN centre, said, “The autonomous campus shuttle uses various sensors and related technology. It was tested and deployed on campus. It has a LiDAR-based navigation system.”
What is TiHAN?
One of the nation’s top research and development hubs for autonomous mobility technology is TiHAN IIT Hyderabad. It even has an agreement in place with NATRAX (National Automotive Test Tracks) for cooperation in the development of testing facilities for autonomous navigation and related human resource upskilling.
