India defeated England by 10 wickets for the first time in ODI history on Tuesday at The Oval thanks in large part to an outstanding performance by captain and opener Rohit Sharma (July 12). England only had 111 runs to defend, which was probably never going to be enough to contend with India’s formidable batting order.
As they reached their 18th hundred-run partnership in ODIs, Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan made sure that no other Indian hitter was needed. Rohit Sharma’s form had been questioned a lot heading into the first ODI because he hadn’t made many significant runs in a while.
The “Hitman,” on the other hand, scored 76 runs off just 58 deliveries, ensuring that the visitors had little trouble reaching the target. Twitter users rejoiced after India’s victory and the return to form of the Indian captain. Here are a few responses:
England’s sole opportunity to keep the game intriguing was by taking early wickets and applying pressure on India. Their bowlers, though, had trouble maintaining the same level of consistency as the Indian bowlers.
The hosts tried pitching the ball high, but it didn’t work, so they started launching a barrage of short balls at Rohit Sharma. The hosts persisted to feed him those deliveries despite knowing how powerful the 35-year-old was against that length, and he profited beautifully.
The fact that all five of Sharma’s sixes were strong pull shots demonstrated once more that Rohit wasn’t going to be intimidated by that line and length. For India, Shikhar Dhawan recently played in a competitive match. He would have been glad to get a few runs under his belt and keep his perfect record.
This outstanding performance will give India a lot of encouragement going into the second ODI, which will be contested at Lord’s on July 14.
