Addressing the 50th National Management Convention held by All India Management Assoiciation, R.C Bhargava, the Chairman of Maruti Suzuki Ltd said that the carbon footprints of battery powered car- electric cars would be much higher than Hybrid cars, the reason he stated that was the point that the 75 percent of the electricity in India is produced using coal.
R.C Bhargave added that electric energy can’t be considered as a sustainable option until India achieves atleast 50 percent of its electricity production with renewable energy sources. Till then, Hybrid cars are more cleaner than the completely electric vehicles. He also said that in the current scenario even switching to CNG cars is a much better option than electric vehicles.
While talking about a bit late in the electric car market, Bhargava said ” May be India should move to ethanol, fuel cell options and hydrogen instead of going for electric cars”. R.C Bhargava told that Maruti built an electric variant of WagonR but its doesn’t met the parameters of cost effiiciency.
On the dilemma of manufacturing sector not getting huge success even after improved ease of busssiness and production linked incentive schemes. Stating the reason, Bhargava said that State authorities are living with license and control mindset till now and on the other hand entrepreneurs are more inclined towards generating personal wealth instead of inclusive growth of the companies. He said that “Time is not valued by state bureaucracies.. and entrepreneurs cannot lay the blame only on labour laws”. The present manufacturing sector growth is just 5 percent but India needs to achieve a mark of 12 percent annual growth, he said.
Despite the costly transition consstraints which is likely to keep the car industry’s gowth at 5 percent, R.C Bhargava is optimistic about the growth of Indian autombile industry because presently there are no economical constraints in the Indian economy.
