Hydrogen Powered Bus: A hydrogen bus trial run has begun in Leh, according to a statement from the state-owned power giant NTPC.
In order to achieve carbon-neutral Ladakh, NTPC is building a hydrogen fueling station, a solar power plant and supplying five fuel cell buses for use on Leh’s intracity routes, it continued.
Hydrogen-Powered Buses in Leh
“The first-of-its-kind Green Hydrogen Mobility Project at 11,562 ft is co-located with a dedicated solar plant of 1.7 MW for providing renewable power. The fuel cell buses are designed for operation in sub-zero temperatures in rarefied atmospheres, typical to such altitude locations, which is a unique feature of this project,” the company said.
After a three-month process of field trials, roadworthiness tests and other legal requirements, the first hydrogen bus arrived in Leh on August 17. India will be the first country to operate hydrogen buses on public highways.
NTPC’s Plan
By 2032, NTPC intends to have installed 60 GW of renewable energy capacity, become a leader in the field of green hydrogen technology, and establish itself as a major participant in the energy storage market. In order to reduce carbon emissions, the business is pursuing a number of initiatives, including carbon capture, EV buses, smart NTPC Townships, and hydrogen blending.
