Iran Protests: Since Wednesday night, the crackdown on anti-hijab demonstrations has resulted in the deaths of at least eight demonstrators by the Iranian security forces. Amnesty International, a human rights organisation, claims that security personnel fired on mourners and demonstrators, killing at least eight people.
Amnesty International stated on Thursday that “Iran’s security forces killed at least eight people since last night when they once more opened fire on mourners and protesters.”
The “reckless and unlawful use of firearms” was also denounced by the human rights organisation.
On Wednesday, thousands of protesters marched through Mahsa Amini’s village to mark 40 days since her passing. It was alleged that Iranian security forces opened fire on the demonstrators.
On September 16, Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman of Kurdish descent, passed away. She had been detained by Tehran’s morality police for allegedly violating the Islamic dress code for women.
Huge rallies in Iran
The biggest rallies spearheaded by women since a wave of protests in 2019 over gasoline price increases were started as a result of her death. Women have been active in the protests, waving and burning their veils, and some have even had their hair cut in the open.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei blames US and Israel
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, has accused the US and Israel of inciting the wave of national turmoil brought on by outrage over Mahsa Amini’s passing. Khamenei recently denounced images of protesters burning cars and pulling off their hijabs as “activities that are not normal, that are inhuman.” He has issued a warning, saying that “those who sow discord to undermine the Islamic Republic deserve stern prosecution and punishment.”
The most recent significant demonstration in Iran, popularly known as “Bloody November,” began in 2019 in response to a 50%–200% spike in fuel prices.
