KTM 990cc: KTM has been working on a new parallel-twin engine for its upcoming models, like the recently spotted RC 990, which will have a displacement of nearly 1,000cc. This is not a secret. Now, new pictures have come out that show how KTM has changed the inside of its new parallel-twin mill.
The facts about the new KTM 990cc parallel-twin engine
The 790 Duke, which has been updated for 2023, was the first bike to have KTM’s liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine. At the time, the engine was 799cc. After that, when the strict Euro-5/BS6 emission rules went into effect, KTM increased the engine size to 889cc and put it in the 890 line of bikes, which includes the 890 Duke, 890 Duke R, 890 Adventure, and 890 Adventure R.
The first time around, increasing the displacement from 799cc to 889cc was pretty easy. The bore was changed from 88mm to 90.7mm, but the stroke stayed the same at 68.8mm.
This time, though, the parallel-twin KTM engine has been heavily reworked. Compared to the 889cc engine, it has a different head, engine casings, oil sump, and exhaust ports. For example, the oil sump on the new engine has been moved to one side, probably to make room for a bigger catalytic converter to meet stricter emission rules. As far as most people are concerned, this is a brand-new engine.
Three new models are likely to come out
The new mill’s exact capacity is still a secret (for now), but it is said to hold nearly 1,000cc. With this new engine, at least three new models are likely to come out: the 990 Duke, the RC 990, and the 990 adventure.

We don’t know how much power or torque this new engine will have yet, but since the 790 Duke made 105hp and the 890 Duke R made 121hp, it seems likely that this new engine will make between 140 and 145hp. That will bring it close to the 955cc L-Twin in the Ducati Panigale V2 and Streetfighter V2.
It’s still not clear if this motor will replace the one in the 890 Duke or if it will be sold alongside the current one.
