Mahindra Thar: Along with a new variation, the Mahindra Thar will soon have a new powertrain choice. A 1.5-litre diesel engine will be added to Thar’s current lineup of 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engines. Given that the Thar is under four metres long, the installation of the 1.5-litre diesel engine will also help it qualify for the lower tax level. Last month, during a gathering in Igatpuri, Maharashtra, dealers were given a demonstration of the Thar 1.5 diesel.
Mahindra Thar entry-level variant
The 1.5-liter Thar engine will be the same 1,497cc unit that now powers the Marazzo, and it will produce 117hp. This engine will only be paired with a five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission is not available. Furthermore, this engine will only be offered in 2WD form; it will not be equipped with the 4WD technology found on the more expensive Thar 2.2-litre diesel. Mahindra will be able to price the Thar more affordably thanks to this and the advantages that vehicles under four metres long provide.
The low-range gear lever on the centre console has been replaced with a new storage compartment, which is also vividly seen in spy photos of the Thar 1.5 diesel’s interior.
Price and launch timeline
Mahindra can price the Thar 1.5 diesel 2WD around the Rs 10-11 lakh range – at least for the entry-level form – by leaving out 4WD and using a smaller 1.5-litre engine that offers excise advantages.
According to sources, the Thar 2WD with the 1.5-litre diesel and 2.0-liter petrol engines would go on sale sometime in January 2023. Maruti Suzuki will also unveil the 5-door Jimny during the Auto Expo 2023 during this month. However, Mahindra won’t be at the Auto Expo this year.
Mahindra will offer a 2WD edition of the Thar with the 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine in addition to the new 1.5-litre diesel engine. The Thar 2.0 petrol 2WD will only be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox.
