Mexico, one of the top five worst affected countries by the pandemic, has received a shipment of over 8 lakh vaccine doses from India. The country has received 870,000 doses of the vaccine as it prepares to began the second phase of covid-19 vacccination programme that aims to inoculate the older adults and those below the age who are susepcted to be more vulnerbale to the disease.
Mexico became the first country in the Latin America to start the covid-19 vaccine programme when it began administering the vaccine on December 23. However, the country’s progress was put on a hold after the shipment of Pfizer was delayed.
As of now, the country expects to receive more vaccine doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. According to Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, the country would receive 494,000 doses of the vaccine on Tuesday.
Besides this, the country will receive more vaccine shots from India. The shipment that the country received on Sunday attribute for 42 per cent of the two million shots that India plans to supply to Mexico.
Mexico also has an agreement to locally produce AstraZeneca covid-19 vaccine with Argentina. The two countries will reportedly produce 250 million doses of the vaccine to supply across Latin America, with the financial support from the foundation of Mexican Billionaire Carlos Slim.
The country also awaits approval from Health authorities to conduct late stage clinical trials of a Cuban covid-19 vaccine.As per Ebrard, the pending autorization will be granted at the earliers.
As on date, Mexico has recorded over 1.8 million cases of covid-19, while the death toll has surged above 173,000. That is world’s third highest virus related deaths after the United States and Brazil .
