Milk Powered Cars: In order to turn the sugars produced as a byproduct of the ultrafiltration process into ethanol for your car, Michigan dairy farmers have teamed up with a distillery up north.
Cars in the Future to be Powered by Milk?
The MMPA announced its new collaboration with Dairy Distiller, an organisation situated in Ontario, Canada and well-known for its Vodkow range of alcoholic beverages. Distillation at a dairy distillery begins with a material called milk permeate, unlike other traditional methods of producing vodka. Lactose, a sugar that occurs naturally, is abundant in this residue of the ultrafiltration procedure used in the manufacturing of dairy products. To begin fermentation and begin the process of producing ethanol, add some yeast to the mix. The procedure finally attracted the attention of the MMPA, even though the firm typically puts the produced neutral alcohol into one of their vodka brands. In Constantine, Michigan, where the organisation has a facility, over 14,000 tonnes of milk permeate are produced each year, the majority of which is now used as a feed crop for animals.
Despite traditionally feeding that ethanol to Canadians (in the form of vodka), Dairy Distiller will soon start feeding it to American cars as well. They claim that a $41 million plant scheduled to debut in early 2025 will make that possible.
Where will the facility be located?
In Constantine, Michigan, where 14,000 tonnes of milk permeate are produced annually, the facility will be situated near to an existing MMPA location. The facility will have the ability to convert the lactose-rich substance into 2.2 million gallons of ethanol each year.
A $2.5 million grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund will finance the new Constantine location, which when mixed with transportation fuel will offset 14,500 tonnes of carbon annually. The MMPA predicts that this will aid in a 5% reduction in the carbon footprint of the milk processing facility in Constantine.
