Due to coming in every month, this fast is called Durgashtami. This day has a great importance. If the devotees keep fast and worship her according to law, mother Durga becomes very happy . If a devotee worships the mother with true heart and devotion If so, then his wishes are definitely fulfilled. In this month of Ashadh,the monthly Durgashtami is today i.e. on Saturday, July 17.
Method of worshipping Durga Maa
If worship is done on this day with full rituals, then the desire of the mind is fulfilled by Maa Durga. On this day, after taking a quick bath in the morning, Ganga water is sprinkled at the place of worship. After this, red cloth is spread on a wooden plank. Then the idol of Durga Mata is placed on it. Akshat, vermilion and red flowers are offered to the mother and fruits and sweets are offered as prasad. The aarti of the mother is done with incense and lamps. Then with folded hands, prayers are offered to the Mother Goddess.

Monthly Durgashtami will start from 04:34 am on Saturday, 17th July and will end at 2:41 pm on Sunday, 18th July.
Story of Durga Ashtami
According to the scriptures, centuries ago the Asuras became very powerful on earth and they started ascending to heaven. Asuras killed many gods and then created havoc in heaven. The most powerful demon among them was Mahishasura. Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma created Goddess Durga in the form of Shakti.

Each deity provided a special weapon to Goddess Durga. After this, Adishakti Durga came to earth and killed the Asuras. Maa Durga defeated the army of Mahishasura. From that day the festival of Durga Ashtami started.
