MUMBAI: The India Meteorological Department issued an orange signal for nearby Thane and Palghar and a yellow notice for Mumbai, on Wednesday.
An official reported that three people were hurt in the avalanche as Mumbai residents continued to experience hardship owing to water on roads. A resident said in a tweet that they no longer need a car for commuting but rather a boat.
Following heavy rains on Wednesday, a landslide also happened on a road leading to the Pratapgad Fort in western Maharashtra’s Satara district. According to Sanjay Sonawane, executive engineer for the Public Works Department, there have been no reports of casualties or people trapped under the rubble.
No relief was expected anytime soon as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for several parts of Maharashtra, including the financial capital, for the next two days. Amid the downpour, three persons, including a 15-year-old boy, were injured in a landslide that hit a ‘chawl’ (old row tenements) in the Chunabhatti area, a civic official said. According to a statement from the chief minister’s office (CMO), Shinde ordered the Railway authorities and the BMC administration to designate a nodal officer for coordination between them and for dissemination of information about water-logging and disruption of suburban train services in Mumbai.
According to civic officials, Mumbai is expected to have another rainy day as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy rain across the city and suburbs with a chance of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations over the next 24 hours.
According to a civic official, the island city (south Mumbai) reported an average 107 mm of rainfall during the course of the previous day, compared to 172 mm and 152 mm in the eastern and western suburbs.
He added there had been reports of water-logging close to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link’s Worli end, which had caused the southbound traffic to move slowly.
According to the official, there was also flooding in the Khar subway, which had an impact on traffic.
According to him, water logging of up to two feet at the Mancherji Joshi Chowk junction in Matunga, up to one foot at the Crystal House area in Powai, and up to two feet near the Asalpha bus stop in Ghatkopar were obstructing traffic.
Tuesday saw significant rainfall at the well-known Mahabaleshwar hill station in Satara. According to a district official, it received 197 mm of rain in the 24 hours ended at 8 am on Wednesday.
