Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, who on Friday expressed concern over the power situation in Punjab, allegedly owes the state power company more than Rs 8 lakh. Amid power crunch in Punjab, ruling Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday urged for a new law to scrap the power purchase agreements (PPAs) signed during the previous Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party government. In a veiled attack on Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, Sidhu said if the state works “in the right direction”, there will be no need to cut power or regulate office hours in Punjab.
Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu recently targeted his government over the issue of power cut. He had said that if work is done in the right direction, there will be no need for power cuts. But now after the disclosure of the outstanding bill, Sidhu himself has come on the backfoot. The website of Punjab State Electricity Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has exposed Sidhu who is worried about the power crisis.
According to the website of PSPCL, the electricity bill of Sidhu’s house in Amritsar has gone up to 8,67,540, which has not been deposited yet and the last date for submission of the bill was July 2. Despite repeated attempts, Sidhu could not be reached for comment. It is worth noting that amid the power shortage in Punjab, Navjot Singh Sidhu had urged for a new law to cancel the power purchase agreement signed during the previous Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party government. He had said that if the state works in the right direction, there will be no need for power cuts in Punjab.
In view of the power crisis, the state government had ordered to cut down the office hours as well as cut power supply to the more energy consuming industries. The Chief Minister had also appealed to all government offices to make proper use of electricity. He had said that the situation is very serious as the power demand in the state has reached 14,500 MW. On this basis, Navjot Singh Sidhu had targeted the CM.
