The Supreme Court has made a big comment in the matter of providing free facilities by political parties during elections. The Supreme Court has said that freebies are a threat to the country’s economy. This is a serious issue. Election commission should look into this. The central government has also supported the demand to rein in political parties promising free facilities in elections.
Hearing in the Supreme Court on the petition to cancel the recognition of political parties promising free facilities in elections, the court has asked the Election Commission to pay more attention to the matter. The Supreme Court has said that this matter is very serious. The problem is that every political party takes advantage of such announcements. It is not about any one political party. Will this be discussed in Parliament?
The Supreme Court has said that all the parties related to the matter, Law Commission, NITI Aayog, all parties, Law Commission should give their suggestions. All the parties should consider the formation of that institution, which can find a solution. Also, the Supreme Court asked the Centre, the Election Commission, senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal and the petitioners to submit their suggestions on setting up an expert committee within 7 days to examine how free promises are regulated. Go and prepare a report on it.
However, as Sibal said in the court that it should be left to Parliament to debate and pass a law on the matter, CJI Ramana pointed out that no political party would stand against freebies.
“Do you think Parliament will debate the issue of freebies? Which political party will debate? No political party would oppose freebies. Everyone wants it. We must think about the tax payers and the country’s economy,” CJI Ramana said.
The next hearing in this case will be on August 11.
