Maharashtra: Former governors of Jharkhand and Tripura, Ramesh Bais, took his oath as the new Governor of Maharashtra on Saturday. His appointment came after President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation of the former Governor, Bhagat Singh Koshyari. Bais was sworn in at a crucial time in Maharashtra politics, as former CM Uddhav Thackeray lost his claim to the Shiv Sena party name and symbol after being ousted due to Eknath Shinde’s rebellion against his leadership.
A New Governor Takes Charge in Maharashtra amidst Turmoil
On Friday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) ruled that the Shiv Sena party name and symbol would be given to the Eknath Shinde faction, marking a significant blow for the Uddhav-led Shiv Sena. In its decision, the ECI stated that the current constitution of the Shiv Sena party was undemocratic and had been “mutilated to undemocratically appoint people from a coterie as office bearers without any election at all.” While the Shinde faction welcomed the decision, the Uddhav Thackeray faction accused the Election Commission of acting as a BJP agent and termed the ruling as “murder of democracy.” They plan to approach the Supreme Court against the decision.

Bhagat Singh Koshyari Resigns as Governor of Maharashtra

On several occasions in the past, Koshyari has been criticized by the then Maha Vikas Aghadi government for statements on Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and the contributions of the Marwari-Gujarati communities to the development of the state.
