The committee investigating the Pegasus spying case has not confirmed any of the mobiles tested by it to have Pegasus spyware. The committee has told the Supreme Court that a total of 29 phones were given to it by the people. 5 was found to contain malware. But it could not be decided that it was Pegasus. During the hearing of the case, Chief Justice NV Ramana also said that the committee has spoken of not getting full cooperation from the central government.
The committee has also made some recommendations for the future. The committee has also requested that in view of the privacy of the people, the findings of the investigation of mobile phones should not be published. The Supreme Court has said that it will upload parts of the report on its website.
Last year, 15 petitioners, including senior journalist N Ram, former Union minister Yashwant Sinha, CPM MP John Brittas, had filed a petition in the Supreme Court alleging that people were being spied on through Pegasus spyware. The petitioners had demanded an inquiry from the court. On 27 October 2021, the court had formed a 3-member technical committee to investigate the truth of the matter. Former Supreme Court judge Justice RV Raveendran was appointed to oversee the committee. The technical expert committee was to report on these aspects:-
Was Pegasus spyware inserted into the phones or other devices of citizens of India?
Who suffered from this?
What steps did the Center take after reports of hacking of WhatsApp in 2019?
Did the Indian government or any state government or any government agency acquire Pegasus spyware?
Did someone private buy or use it?

While constituting the committee, the court had also said that the committee would suggest for the future. Today, a bench of Chief Justice NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Hima Kohli said that the committee has given its final report. The committee has explained in detail about malwares. Requested to give more protection to the privacy of the people. Recommended to improve cyber security. The court has said that it will review the action taken on the recommendations of the committee later.
