According to sources in the defence establishment, India successfully completed the night tests of the Agni-5 nuclear-capable ballistic missile on Thursday. The missile is essential to India’s self-defense systems because it can reach targets more than 5000 kilometres away.

The new technology and equipment on the missile, designed to make the missile lighter, should be verified, according to the defence sources. The exercise sought to increase the Agni-5 missile’s range if necessary.
The trials took place a short time after Chinese and Indian forces got into a clash at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh. Both sides’ armies lost a number of soldiers, however none of the armies reported any fatalities.

China raised concern over India’s launch of Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Agni-5 last year.
China expressed alarm on India’s launch of an Agni-5 intercontinental ballistic missile last year, citing UNSC 1172 as justification. The resolution was released following India’s nuclear tests in 1998.
An Indigenously developed surface-to-surface ballistic missile known as the Agni-5 was created as part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). It is a fire-and-forget missile, which cannot be stopped without an interceptor missile.
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam concieved the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) with the goal of making India self-sufficient in missile technology devlopment. The P-A-T-N-A, Prithvi, Agni, Trishul, Nag, and Akash missiles were all part of the programme.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is also planning multiple coordinated air combat exercises in the northeastern region with the purpose to check the readiness of the aircraft.
