Opposition Unity Meeting in Patna: The Trinamool Congress of Mamata Banerjee declared on Thursday that the highly anticipated opposition gathering in Patna on Friday (June 23) was a “good beginning” before the 2024 general election. The goal of the summit, which will be hosted by Nitish Kumar, chief minister of Bihar, is to get an agreement on creating a unified opposition front to challenge the BJP.

- The importance of anti-BJP parties coming together to oppose “undemocratic and authoritarian policies” was highlighted by the Trinamool Congress. “A good beginning even before reaching Patna, All parties working to save the Constitution of the country are on the same page on many issues. For now, we have a date, a venue and an agreement that the head of every party will attend the meeting,” Trinamool’s Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien said, warning against “anyone jumping the gun and speculating”.
- Leading opposition figures Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, MK Stalin, Sharad Pawar, Mehbooba Mufti, Hemant Soren, and Arvind Kejriwal are anticipated to attend the gathering.
- Jayant Chaudhary, the leader of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), would not attend the ceremony on Friday. The lawmaker from Uttar Pradesh wrote to Nitish Kumar on Thursday to inform him that he would be unable to attend the meeting due to a family event.
- The Patna summit, according to Nitish Kumar’s party leader and Bihar minister Vijay Chowdhary, will be a “historic meeting” because nothing like it has ever taken place before. “The BJP could be stopped. Although many opposition groups may disagree at the state level, this is the first meeting of opposition parties, and a decision will be made to fight alongside one another, he said.’
- Akhilesh Prasad Singh, the head of the Bihar Congress, emphasised the necessity of creating a common minimum programme (CMP) quickly on Thursday. The Congressman asserted that the BJP would lose more than 100 seats if the opposition parties banded together and ran candidates in the Lok Sabha elections the following year. “We hope that everyone will sit down and work out a peaceful resolution so that we can all move forward together,” Singh added.
- Even while it is believed that the Patna conclave represents a concerted effort to combat the BJP, the issue of leadership continues to be divisive. Sukhendu Shekhar Roy, a senior Trinamool leader, countered that only the media and the BJP were concerned about it. Such a leadership issue doesn’t concern the opposing parties or the general populace.
- In addition to the identity of the prime minister, opposition parties are anxious about seat-sharing. Prior to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Trinamool had declared that it will help the Congress in areas where it is popular.
- A “futile exercise,” according to the BJP, who further said that such a “opportunistic alliance would not produce any results.”
- The suggestion to organise a conference of opposition leaders in Patna was made by Mamata Banerjee. When she first met Nitish Kumar in Kolkata in April of this year, she recalled the memory of Jayaprakash Narayan.
- The conference will be called by Nitish Kumar, who severed ties with the BJP last year. The chief minister of Bihar, who has met with numerous leaders in recent months, has become the pivot of the effort to forge unity among the Opposition.
