BJP v/s AAP: The BJP has made yet another about-face and chosen to run against the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP in the election for mayor and deputy mayor of Delhi. Following their defeat in the civic election, the BJP finalised its list of candidates for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) offices.
Rekha Gupta, a Shalimar Bagh-based BJP councillor, has been chosen to run for mayor, and Kamal Bagri, a candidate from the Ram Nagar ward, will run for deputy mayor.
AAP declares its candidate for deputy mayor and mayor
The AAP, which now has the most council members in the civic body, has declared Aale Mohammad Iqbal as its candidate for deputy mayor and Shelly Oberoi as its candidate for mayor. East Patel Nagar Councilwoman Ms. Oberoi and Ms. Iqbal from Chandani Mahal.
He had tweeted, “Now over to electing a mayor for Delhi. It will all depend on who can hold the numbers in a close contest, which way the nominated councillors vote etc. Chandigarh has a BJP mayor, for instance.”
Rekha Gupta, BJP candidate for mayor of Delhi
Rekha Gupta is a Shalimar Bagh councillor. She has been chosen as a councillor a third time from this location. She has previously held a number of significant positions in MCD and has been affiliated with the BJP from her early undergraduate years.
Rekha Gupta served as the general secretary and a part of the national executive of the BJP. From 1996 to 1997, she served as the president of the Delhi University Students Union. She was a councillor from Pitampura from 2007 until 2012, giving her a stronghold in North Delhi’s Pitampura neighbourhood.
On January 6, elections will be held to fill the positions of mayor and deputy mayor.
