The BJP members in Tuticorin have been burning photos of AIADMK ruler E. Palaniswami and accusing him of splitting “coalition dharma,” helping to bring the relationship between the two parties to an all-time low. CRT Nirmal Kumar, the head of the BJP’s state IT branch, was one of the five BJP leaders that joined the AIADMK last week. 13 further BJP members left the party on Wednesday in favour of CTR Nirmal Kumar.
On Sunday, Mr. Kumar left the party and joined the AIADMK, alleging that Mr. Annamalai had a secret deal with a DMK minister.
The AIADMK has lost three elections since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections while competing in alliance with the BJP. The parties did not even coordinate their campaigns during the latest by-election, which the AIADMK alliance lost. According to sources, the party now sees the BJP as a liability.
When Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid a private visit to the state in November of last year, Mr. Palaniswami claimed there was no need for them to meet.
State BJP head K Annamalai said that the AIADMK poaching from the BJP showed that his party has “arrived”. “This shows we are growing in Tamil Nadu. The
BJP has arrived,” said state BJP chief K Annamalai.
He said, “When the BJP receives our cadre, it beats its chest, but when his party cadre come to us, they shout.” He then slammed the state BJP chief for what he called “defamation” of Jayalalithaa.
Several AIADMK leaders, including former minister Nainar Nagendran, who is now the party’s leader in the assembly, had earlier been taken on by the BJP.
Because of the continuous conflict between E Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam, the BJP, which only has four MLAs in the 234-member house, projected itself as the main opposition.
Because of this, Thursday’s district secretaries meeting, where the topic is expected to be discussed, will receive a lot of attention.
