A meeting of the Eastern Zonal Council (EZC) was held under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Amit Shah at around 11 am on Saturday (December 17) at the West Bengal Secretariat in Kolkata. This was the 25th meeting of the Eastern Zonal Council. The states of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Sikkim and Odisha come under the Eastern Zonal Council.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, her Jharkhand counterpart Hemant Soren, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav and Odisha cabinet minister Pradeep Amat attended the meeting, officials said. The meeting was expected to last for about two hours.
These issues were discussed in the meeting
According to sources, apart from security matters, issues related to the international border were also discussed in the meeting. Sources said that CM Mamata Banerjee raised the issue of border security in the meeting. She said that the issue of infiltration in Bengal bordering Bangladesh is important and there is a lack of cooperation from the BSF. A detailed report about the discussion held in the meeting is yet to come.
Earlier, on Saturday at Kolkata’s Nabanna, CM Mamata Banerjee welcomed Union Home Minister Amit Shah while presenting a bouquet. At the same time, both the veteran leaders were seen smiling during the meeting. Officials told that the Union Home Minister is scheduled to leave for Shillong after the meeting.
It was expected that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar would attend the meeting, but Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav came in his place. Recently, Nitish Kumar did not turn up even after receiving an invitation for the G-20 meeting. Later he was connected to the meeting through online medium.
Shah’s meeting with BJP leaders in Kolkata
Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a closed-door meeting with members of the party’s West Bengal unit in Kolkata on Friday (December 16) evening to review the law and order situation in the state. BJP leaders said that Shah also took stock of the party’s preparations for the upcoming panchayat elections in West Bengal.
BJP national vice president Dilip Ghosh told reporters, “We have informed the home minister about the current law and order situation in West Bengal. He has also been informed about the party’s preparations for the Panchayat elections. Shah has urged party workers to reach out to maximum number of voters. The party’s state unit president Sukant Majumdar and Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Shubhendu Adhikari were also present in the meeting which lasted for about 30 minutes.
