Pawan Singh, a Bhojpuri singer, was expelled by the Bihar Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday for running as an independent candidate against the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) official candidate in the Karakat seat in the Lok Sabha elections of 2024.
Pawan Singh Declares Independent Candidacy in Karakat
Pawan Singh has already declared his intention to run as an independent from the Karakat Lok Sabha constituency. Even though Pawan Singh was thought to be a BJP member, party sources had previously said nothing about it. Before deciding to run on her own, the singer-turned-politician reportedly requested a ticket from Rashtriya Janata Dal.
Pratima Devi Withdraws Candidacy from Karakat
Pratima Devi, the mother of Pawan Singh, had earlier announced her withdrawal from the Bihar Karakat Lok Sabha constituency. Upendra Kushwaha, the leader of the Rashtriya Lok Morcha and a former Union minister, is running as the NDA candidate in the south Bihar seat, where Pawan Singh opted to run after turning down a BJP ticket from Asansol in West Bengal.
Pratima Devi, who had announced her candidacy as an independent on May 14, has withdrawn, according to confirmation from the Indian Election Commission. There were many rumors that her son, who was afraid of having his own nomination rejected, had pushed her to enter the race. The deadline for withdrawing candidacy from the Karakat seat, where elections were set for June 1, was May 17.
RK Singh Criticizes Pawan Singh’s Independent Run
Some BJP leaders, notably Union minister RK Singh, who is running for reelection from the nearby Arrah Lok Sabha constituency, criticized Pawan Singh’s choice to challenge the NDA nominee. The deadline for withdrawing candidacy from the Karakat seat, where elections were set for June 1, was May 17.
Some BJP leaders, notably Union minister RK Singh, who is running for reelection from the nearby Arrah Lok Sabha constituency, criticized Pawan Singh’s choice to challenge the NDA nominee.
“Either he should announce that he would not contest polls against the NDA nominee from Karakat or he should be suspended from the primary membership of the BJP. If he fights elections from Karakat, his suspension from the party will be the appropriate decision. Upendra Kushwa is the NDA candidate, who is Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji’s nominee,” RK Singh had earlier said.
