Bharatiya Janata Party has registered a massive win in the Gujarat district panchayat polls. The party has won all 31 seats, wiping out Congress.
The counting of votes for Sunday’s local body polls in 81 municipalities, 31 district panchayats, and 231 taluka panchayats was conducted on Tuesday. By 7 PM, the BJP registered a massive lead in all 31 district panchayats.
The Congress, which had made significant gains in 2015 elections to these local bodies, stood vanquished – Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) chief Amit Chavda and Leader of Opposition in Assembly Paresh Dhanani resigned from their posts owning up to the debacle.
As BJP headed for a massive victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the results showed that Gujarat remains firmly with the party’s agenda of development and good governance.
“Results of the Nagar Palika, Taluka Panchayat and District Panchayat polls across Gujarat give a crystal clear message — Gujarat is firmly with the BJP’s agenda of development and good governance.
“I bow to the people of Gujarat for the unwavering faith and affection towards BJP,” he said in a tweet.
