BJP registers win at Rampur Sadar for the first time
It had been an upset of sorts as BJP has been able to breach Rampur, considered a safe stronghold of Samjawadi Party leader Azam Khan. Akhilesh Yadav had alleged that the police and the administration had prevented people from going to the polls.

Bypoll necessitated following conviction of Azam Khan in a hate speech
The constituency had a dismal voter turnout , with less than 40 per cent of eligible voters turning up at the polling stations. The SP MLA and party heavyweight Azam Khan’s disqualification as a result of his conviction in a 2019 hate speech case prompted the bye-election.
Rampur has a sizeable Muslim population and BJP had never won this seat before and Azam Khan himself won the seat between 1980 and 1993 on tickets from different parties.
Azam Khan has claimed that police had intimidated, threatened, and prevented people from casting ballots. On Tuesday, there was a bedlalm in the UP Assembly over this matter, and lawmakers from the Samjawadi Party interrupted the proceedings there, accusing Rampur Sadar by-elections of being a murder of democracy.
In the Rampir Sadar assembly segment , the BJP fielded Akash Saxena , the son of former party legislator Shiv Bahadur Saxena, against Azam Khan’s protégé Asim Raja.
Akash Saxena won with close to 62 percent of the votes, while Raja came second with 36.16 vote share
