The secretary of the house repeatedly requested all the councilors to leave the mayor seat and sit in their respective seats.
However, the AAP councilors refused to give up the mayor seat and damaged the property. Significantly, AAP had performed impressively in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections by winning 14 out of 35 wards. While BJP won 12 wards, Congress 8 and Shiromani Akali Dal won 1 ward. On the other hand, Union Minister and Punjab BJP in-charge Gajendra Singh Shekhawat congratulated Sarabjit Kaur and said, ‘I want to congratulate Sarabjit Kaur of BJP and the new mayor of MCC. Instead of protesting and seeking political sympathy, AAP should take legal action.’
