Counting of votes is going on in Mainpuri Lok Sabha by-election in UP. In the initial trends, BJP’s Raghuraj Shakya was seen getting an edge on this seat. BJP had left Dimple Yadav behind from Bhogaon assembly, but now the game seems to be turning. Half an hour after the counting of votes started, Dimple Yadav has left BJP behind in all 5 seats of Mainpuri. Dimple is getting an edge in Mainpuri Sadar, Karhal, Bhogaon, Jaswant Nagar and Kishni.
Tough fight in SP-BJP
The victory in Mainpuri may provide some solace to Akhilesh Yadav after the defeat in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections earlier this year and the defeat of the BJP in the Azamgarh and Rampur Lok Sabha seats in the June bypolls. The Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have not fielded their candidates for the bypolls, so the direct contest at all three places is between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party and its ally Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).
Counting of votes is going on for all the three seats
Azam Khan, an MLA from Rampur, was sentenced to three years in prison after being convicted in a case registered in April 2019 for hate speech, following which he was disqualified by the Speaker. Counting of votes is going on for the by-elections held on Mainpuri Lok Sabha and Khatauli, Rampur assembly of UP. There is a close fight between the SP alliance and the BJP.
The by-election on Mainpuri seat is being held due to the demise of Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav in October. Mulayam Singh Yadav’s elder daughter-in-law and party president Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple Yadav is the candidate from Mainpuri while Raghuraj Singh Shakya, a former confidante of Mulayam’s brother Shivpal Singh Yadav, is the BJP candidate from this seat.
