Champai Soren: Former Jharkhand CM Champai Soren Joins BJP Ahead of Assembly Elections

Soren revealed that he had considered launching a new party or joining another political outfit but ultimately decided to align with the BJP

Champai Soren: — In a significant political development ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday. Soren, who had previously been a close aide of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder Shibu Soren, made the switch to the BJP at a ceremony in Ranchi, attended by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Addressing the gathering after his induction, Soren spoke candidly about his decision to leave JMM, a party he had been deeply associated with for many years. “I was embarrassed, and that’s why I had decided to retire from politics. However, because of the love and support of the people of Jharkhand, I decided not to retire from politics,” Soren said. He also recounted his involvement in the Jharkhand movement, which eventually led to the state’s formation.

Soren revealed that he had considered launching a new party or joining another political outfit but ultimately decided to align with the BJP. “I thought that I will launch a new party or join another party, but I will never stay in that organization where I was embarrassed. Later, I decided to join a party (BJP) to continue serving the people of Jharkhand,” he added.

A Strategic Move by the BJP

Champai Soren’s entry into the BJP is seen as a strategic move by the party to strengthen its position in Jharkhand’s tribal belt, where Scheduled Tribes constitute approximately 26% of the electorate. His departure from JMM, a party he described as “like a family,” came after a period of disillusionment with the party’s current direction.

In his resignation letter to Shibu Soren, the 67-year-old leader expressed his deep regret over leaving JMM but cited the party’s deviation from its founding principles as the reason for his decision. “I have never ever imagined in my dreams that I would quit JMM, a party which is like a family to me… The turn of events of the past forced me to take this decision with much pain… I am pained to say that the party has deviated from its principle,” Soren wrote.

Implications for the Upcoming Elections

Soren’s switch to the BJP is expected to have significant implications for the upcoming assembly elections in Jharkhand. His experience and influence, particularly among the tribal communities, could bolster the BJP’s efforts to gain a stronger foothold in the state.

As the political landscape in Jharkhand shifts ahead of the elections, all eyes will be on how Champai Soren’s move to the BJP will impact the party’s fortunes and the broader electoral dynamics in the state.
