CM Gehlot Accuses BJP in Udaipur Tailor’s Murder, Alleges Election Ploy

CM Gehlot

CM Gehlot: The chief minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, has claimed that the BJP was involved in the murder of Kanhaiya Lal Teli, a tailor from Udaipur. He also stated that the BJP was attempting to incite religious strife in the run-up to the state’s Assembly elections on November 25.

Gehlot Questions Investigation Route on Sunday Trip to Jodhpur

Speaking to reporters on a Sunday campaign trip to Jodhpur, the chief minister of Rajasthan stated that the investigation would have progressed logically if the Rajasthan Police’s Special Operations Group (SOG) had taken on the matter rather than the National Investigation Agency (NIA). On June 28 of last year, in broad daylight, two attackers killed tailor Kanhaiya Lal inside his Udaipur shop for allegedly posting material endorsing suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma.

Tailor’s Murder Follows BJP Leader Nupur Sharma’s Tirade

The event happened not too long after Sharma’s BJP suspension for an alleged tirade against the Prophet. The decapitation of the tailor from Udaipur caused national shockwaves and provoked a widespread uproar. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) re-registered the case on June 29, 2022, after it had been first registered at the Dhanmandi police station in Udaipur. “It was an unfortunate incident and I cancelled my scheduled events and left for Udaipur as soon as I learned of it. However, several top leaders of the BJP chose to attend an event in Hyderabad even after learning of the Udaipur incident,” Gehlot told reporters here.

Gehlot Asserts State Had No Objections to NIA’s Involvement

According to him, the state administration had no objections when the NIA took up the case the day of the occurrence. “No one knows what action the NIA has taken. If our SOG had pursued the case, the culprits would have been brought to justice by now,” CM Gehlot said on Sunday. The horrific murder occurred on June 28 in the Maldas neighbourhood of Udaipur. According to the police, shortly after the crime was committed, the two accused boasted about the “beheading” in a social media video and threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi with severe consequences.

Two Suspects Nabbed Shortly After Udaipur Murder Incident

Shortly after the incident, the two suspects were taken into custody. According to authorities, the attackers recognised themselves as Ghouse Mohammad and Riyaz Akhtari from the video. Days prior to the incident, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan stated that the attackers had been detained by the police in a different matter, and BJP officials had visited the police station to secure their release. “The culprits have links to the BJP. Days before the incident, when the police had arrested these accused in some other case and some BJP leaders visited the police station to get them released,” Gehlot said.

Gehlot Accuses BJP of Bizarre Claims Amidst Sense of Defeat

“The thing is that BJP has sensed defeat in the elections and are, hence, coming up with bizarre claims. They are not speaking a word about the schemes that we launched and the laws we brought. They just want to stir up trouble ahead of the elections,” the Chief Minister said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the Gehlot-led Congress administration of engaging in “vote-bank politics” in the Kanhaiya Lal case last month while speaking at an election rally in Chittorgarh.
