Karnataka Elections 2023: With 2,615 candidates vying for 224 assembly seats, the stakes are high for the BJP and even higher for the Congress as Karnataka votes today to establish a new administration. There will be voting in 58,545 polling places, including auxiliary polling places, and 42,48,028 new voters have registered to vote overall.
Violence erupt in Mandya district
According to the Election Commission of India, 58,545 polling places would be used by up to 5.3 crore voters to cast their ballots. Of these, 12,15,920 are senior citizen voters and 11,771,558 are young voters. Workers from the JDS and the Congress engage in violence in the village of Narayanpura in the Mandya district.
Rumours of Changing EVMs cause Violence
According to police officials, at least three locations reported violent occurrences while voting for the Karnataka Assembly elections on Wednesday. Following “rumours” that the officials were “changing” the EVMs and VVPATs, several irate villagers damaged polling officer vehicles and destroyed some electronic voting machines and VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) machines in Masabinal village in Basavana Bagewadi taluk of Vijayapura district. In the Ballari district and Padmanabhanagar constituency of Bengaluru, respectively, two other occurrences were reported.
