The Congress on Thursday appointed Kanhaiya Kumar as the in-charge of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). According to the party, “Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has appointed Kanhaiya Kumar as the AICC in-charge of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) with immediate effect.”

In the year 2021, Kanhaiya Kumar, former president of JNU Students’ Union, joined the Congress from the Communist Party of India

Kanhaiya Kumar’s name has been discussed among leaders very close to Rahul Gandhi. He was also walking shoulder to shoulder in Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra. He has been seen at the forefront even among the outspoken leaders against the Narendra Modi government at the Centre. Looking at his rapport with Rahul Gandhi, it was believed that he could be made the President of Delhi Congress. The discussion about this was also intense. Not only this, due to his hold in Bihar and being from there, there was also speculation that he could be made the chief of Bihar Congress. However, both the things remained only speculations and he was made in-charge of the student wing of the party.

After joining the party, he had said, ‘I am joining Congress because it is not just a party, it is an idea. This is the oldest and most democratic party in the country, and I am emphasizing on democratic…Not only me, many people think that the country cannot survive without the Congress. The NSUI, which came into existence on 9 April 1971, is the student wing of the Congress. This organization was founded by Indira Gandhi after merging the Kerala Students’ Union and the West Bengal State Students’ Council to form a national student organization. Its chairman is Neeraj Kundan.
