Congress Maharashtra unit president and MLA Nana Patole on Thursday sought the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to save the “culprits” in the alleged phone tapping case. Fadnavis also holds the charge of the Home Department.
Patole also accused the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government of hushing up the matter.
Patole told reporters in Nagpur that the opposition may consider moving a no-confidence motion against Speaker Rahul Narvekar if he continues with his “partisan” attitude. The winter session of the Vidhansabha is going on in Nagpur.
The Congress MLA said, “Why is the government defending the culprits in the phone tapping case?”
Patole said that during the tenure of the then Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government headed by Fadnavis in 2016-17, phones of public representatives, government officials and journalists were illegally tapped.
He said that cases were also registered against IPS officer Rashmi Shukla in this regard.
Patole claimed, “But, the present government is trying to give a clean chit to her (Rashmi Shukla) even though an inquiry committee has found her guilty. This episode pertains to the time when Fadnavis was the Chief Minister and Home Minister and he (Fadnavis) is still the Home Minister.
