Former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh on Saturday slammed the Congress, saying the “panic-stricken” party is in “disarray” and its leaders are telling lies to “cover up mishandling” of the crisis triggered by infighting in its state unit.
This came after Congress general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, referring to Capt Amarinder Singh’s resignation from the post, revealed that 78 out of 79 MLAs had written that the Chief Minister should be replaced.
The Congress leader also claimed that it was a democratic decision and not the one forced by Sonia Gandhi. As per the PTI report, pointing to the purported letter highlighting the lack of confidence in him, Singh said that it is a “comedy of errors.”
He pointed out that since 2017, the Congress had swept every election in Punjab with him at the helm of the government, which was in total contrast to the claims being made by the party leadership. In the last Assembly elections, the party won an unprecedented 77 seats. In the by-elections in 2019, Congress won 3 of the 4 seats, even winning from Sukhbir Badal’s stronghold of Jalalabad.
After a leadership tussle with Navjot Singh Sidhu, Singh resigned from the position of Punjab Chief Minister. Since then, Singh has been criticizing the leadership of the Congress Party.
The sudden resignation of Sidhu from the position of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief after Captian Amarinder Singh’s resignation sends ripples across the state thus highlighting the crisis within the congress party.
