Opposition meet: The meeting of the major opposition parties that was scheduled to be held in Bengaluru from July 13 to July 14 has been postponed and will now be conducted after this year’s Monsoon Session gets over.
Janta Dal United (JDU) leader KC Tyagi has confirmed that the opposition unity meeting will happen after Monsoon session and the new date will be announced later.
There are speculations over dwindling strength of opposition unity. NCP upheaval is a big blow for Sharad Pawar, who is one of the most experienced and diplomatically articulated politicians in the country.
Monsoon sessions of different states
There are instances of overlapping in dates of Monsoon sessions for different states. The Bihar and Karnataka assembly are reported to have dates clash in their Monsoon session and is another reason for postponing of the meeting.
JD(U) had asked Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to postpone the meeting as Bihar Assembly is scheduled to meet for monsoon session between July 10 to July 24. Prominent leaders including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav from RJD will be occupied during the entirety of session.
Fracture in opposition unity
The concerns over unity of the opposition were never unfounded but Ajit Pawar’s move to join Eknath Shinde camp in Maharashtra could prove to be a major turning point in lead up to 2024 elections. Although there are usual expectations of political maneuvering and crisis management from Sharad Pawar but Ajit Pawar’s position after taking oath as the Deputy CM seems invulnerable to many.
Congress and AAP are at loggerheads over Delhi Ordinance issue. AAP was refusing to join opposition meet in Patna after Congress declined to clear its position over the issue. Both parties are engaged in war of words over opposing and neutrailty towards the bill likely to be presented by the central government.
As per Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, Monsoon session of Parliament will commence on July 20 and will conclude on August 11.
