Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Questions ‘One Nation, One Election’ Proposal

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, Arvind Kejriwal, has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government’s consideration of the ‘one nation, one election’ concept, which aims to hold simultaneous elections for various levels of government. Kejriwal expressed doubts about the benefits of such a move for the common people and highlighted the need for other important national priorities.

Kejriwal’s Concerns

Speaking at an event in Haryana, Kejriwal questioned the rationale behind the ‘one nation, one election’ proposal, asking what ordinary citizens would gain from it. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing equal access to education and healthcare for all classes in the country. Kejriwal raised the question: “What is important for the country? One Nation One Election or One Nation One Education (ensuring equal access to quality education for all, regardless of their economic status) and One Nation One Treatment (ensuring equal access to healthcare for all, regardless of their economic status). What will the common man gain from One Nation One Election?” Kejriwal also shared his perspective on social media.

Rahul Gandhi’s Critique

Congress Member of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi, also criticized the central government’s ‘one nation, one election’ proposal. He viewed it as an attack on the unity of India, a union of states. Gandhi emphasized the diverse nature of India’s states and expressed concerns about how this concept could impact the country’s federal structure.

Formation of the Committee

The central government has formed an eight-member committee to examine and provide recommendations on the feasibility of simultaneous elections. The committee includes former President Ram Nath Kovind, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other prominent figures. However, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, declined to be a part of the committee, citing concerns about the terms of reference that he felt could potentially predetermine its conclusions.

The central government’s decision to convene a special session of Parliament from September 18 to 22 indicates the significance of this proposal in the current political landscape.
