Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday said that Dilip Kumar was a superhero in his lifetime and will remain so in future. The golden era of Indian cinema has ended with his death. In her condolence message to Dilip Kumar’s wife Saira Banu, she said that the actor has left an invaluable legacy through his rich contribution to the world of art and culture.
In her letter, Sonia Gandhi said, “The golden era of Indian cinema has come to an end with the passing away of your husband, Shri Dilip Kumar. Shri Dilip Kumar was a legend in his lifetime and will remain a legend in future. Who can forget his role in movies like Ganga Jamuna, Daag, Deedar, Mughal-e-Azam, Naya Daur, Madhumati, Devdas, Ram Aur Shyam. In all his films he charmed, inspired and impressed his audience.”
Sonia Gandhi further said that India will always honor the memory of Dilip Kumar and his countless fans are deeply saddened by his demise.
In her letter to Banu, the Congress chief said, “I pray that you have the strength to bear this loss. My heartfelt condolences are with you.”
98-year-old ‘Tragedy King’ Dilip Kumar, who played memorable roles in best films like Mughal-e-Azam, Madhumati, Devdas, Kohinoor and Ganga-Jamuna, died at Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai due to health issues at around 7.30 am on Wednesday. He was given a final farewell with state honours. His body was first brought to his residence in Bandra. Where Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, his son Aaditya Thackeray, Shah Rakh Khan from the film industry, Karan Johar, Dharmendra, Anil Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Ranbir Kapoor, Vidya Balan, including many notable stars reached for their last glimpse.
