Lok Sabha Election 2024: In a significant political development ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, Swami Prasad Maurya, a prominent leader of the Samajwadi Party, tendered his resignation from the primary membership of the party. This move comes amidst escalating tensions within the party and failed negotiations with the Congress regarding a potential alliance in Uttar Pradesh.
Maurya’s Resignation
Swami Prasad Maurya, who joined the Samajwadi Party in 2022 and contested in the assembly polls from Fazilnagar, decided to sever ties with the party. Citing lack of communication and initiative from the party leadership following his resignation as the national general secretary, Maurya expressed his disappointment in a letter addressed to party chief Akhilesh Yadav.
“I got an opportunity to work with you. But after our talks on February 12 and my resignation (as national general secretary) on February 13, no initiative of any talks with me was taken due to which I am resigning from the primary membership of the party,” Maurya stated in his letter.
Alliance Talks Hit Roadblock
Simultaneously, talks between the Samajwadi Party and the Congress regarding a potential alliance in Uttar Pradesh have reached an impasse. Despite extensive negotiations, the two parties have failed to find common ground, particularly concerning the allocation of seats. The inability to reconcile their differences has cast doubt on the viability of a unified front against the incumbent government.
Is INDIA Alliance on the Verge of Collapse?
The failure of the SP-Congress alliance talks raises legitimate concerns about the broader I.N.D.I.A alliance’s stability. With internal strife within the Samajwadi Party compounded by external challenges in forming alliances, the unity of the larger coalition hangs in the balance. The inability of key players to overcome their differences and present a united front threatens to undermine the coalition’s electoral prospects.
