Election Commission bans West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee from campaigning for 24 hrs till 8 pm on Apr 13 for her alleged remarks with communal overtones.
The action was taken by the polling body
after Banerjee was found “violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC)” for appealing to the voters on communal lines.
The Commission noted that Banerjee made “highly insinuating and provocative remarks laden with serious potential of breakdown of law and order and thereby adversely affecting the election process.”
The complaint against the Mamata Banerjee was filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), after she issued an appeal to the Muslim community to not to divide their votes.
“I am requesting my minority brothers and sisters with folded hands don’t divide the minority votes after listening to the devil (shaitaan) person who had taken money from the BJP,” she had said.
Mamata Banerjee in response to ban said she will stage a sit-protest in Kolkata on Tuesday. “To protest against the undemocratic and unconstitutional decision of the Election Commission of India, I will sit on dharna tomorrow at Gandhi Murti, Kolkata from 12 noon,” she tweeted.
