Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s nephew Bhupendra Singh Honey has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with illegal sand mining case. The investigating agency took Honey into custody on Thursday evening and will present him in the CBI court today. On behalf of the agency, it has been said that Honey has been arrested late night in the money laundering case.
Last month, the ED seized Rs 8 crore during raids on Honey’s premises. This raid was done in connection with illegal sand mining operations in Punjab. In a statement, the Enforcement Directorate had said that documents related to “illegal” sand mining and property transactions, mobile phones, gold worth over Rs 21 lakh and Rolex watch worth Rs 12 lakh were seized during searches.

The arrest came days before the polling for the 117-member Punjab Assembly. Voting will take place on February 20, while the results will be out on March 10.
In the year 2018, Punjab Police had registered a case regarding illegal sand mining in Nawanshahr, Punjab. The accused in this case was Kudratdeep Singh, who had a mine in Nawanshahr. It is alleged that Kudratdeep Singh had formed two companies in which Bhupinder Singh Honey was also the director. There are 26 accused in this case, mostly truck drivers. According to the FIR, the police had caught 30 trucks filled with illegal sand. Based on this FIR, the ED has registered a case of money laundering.
