West Bengal Panchayat Polls 2023: West Bengal‘s panchayat elections are currently being counted, with strict security in place. Since the date of the panchayat elections was announced early last month, there have been over 33 deaths in political conflicts across the state, marring the election. The three-tier panchayat elections were held on July 8 in over 61,000 booths, with a turnout of 80.71 percent. Violence resulted from the looting, setting on fire, and dumping of ballot boxes in ponds in a number of locations. On election day, there was so much violence that 696 polling places had to be reopened.
Lack of Central Security Forces and CCTVs
“We have no hope from this election (Panchayat Election) after the kind of violence that took place earlier. This is not a mandate because Mamta Banerjee’s goons forcefully got the polls done,” said West Bengal BJP General Secretary Agnimitra Paul on Panchayat election results. She added that, “The central security force was not allowed to reach, and there were no CCTVs in the polling stations. We have lost from many centres by 2, 4, 24 votes. Our victory in West Bengal is that people are coming on the road to defeat TMC.” As of Tuesday night, the TMC has won 30,391 gramme panchayat seats and led by 1,767. The nearest rival, the BJP, has gained 8,239 seats and is in the lead in 447 of them. 63,229 gramme panchayat seats are up for election in total. With 2,534 seats won, the CPI(M) party is in the lead in 237 seats. With 2,158 victories, the Congress party is in the lead in 151 seats.
Mamata Banerjee’s Party Dominates Zilla Parishad and Gram Panchayat Seats
Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee, is in the lead in 10 Zilla Parishad seats.
According to the most recent trends, the Trinamool Congress is in the lead in the majority of seats after winning 10 gramme panchayat seats. In 339 counting locations distributed across 22 districts in West Bengal, voting is currently being conducted.
South 24 Paraganas District Official CV Ananda Bose Visits Bhangar Facility
Today, South 24 Paraganas district official and governor of Bengal CV Ananda Bose visited a counting facility in Bhangar. Elections for rural bodies and panchayats are now being counted. In the North 24 Parganas district, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has gained one gramme pachayat seat and is in the lead in 59. Additionally, the majority of seats in Bengal are in favour of the ruling party.
Riots Erupt and Bomb Thrown at Diamond Harbour Counting Centre in Bengal
On counting day, rioting broke out in Bengal, and a bomb was thrown at a counting centre in Diamond Harbour. At Diamond Harbour, the event took place in front of Fakirchand College. Furthermore, opposition parties claim that admission to the counting centre was denied to their counting agents. “People were murdered in this panchayat elections and our chief minister, who made tall claims that this would be a peaceful election, has not made any statement. There was firing and bombing in my constituency, there was bogus voting. So, we have no expectations for this election. There are inputs of BJP counting agents not being allowed at a few counting centres. I am sitting here and I have received information that they will attack here by this afternoon,” BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul told news agency ANI.
