Police today detained Leader of Opposition E Palaniswami (EPS) and other AIADMK MLAs. All of them were trying to sit on a hunger strike outside the assembly. All of them were upset over the Speaker’s expulsion from the assembly by not changing the seat of opposition faction leader and AIADMK deputy chief O Panneerselvam (OPS) in the assembly.
The EPS faction has elected a new deputy chief and has written several letters to the Speaker, demanding that the OPS be shifted from the seat next to the EPS in the assembly and seated elsewhere. The leaders of the EPS faction disrupted the proceedings of the assembly several times yesterday over the same issue. Angered by this, M Appavu expelled them. M Appavu said that I am investigating on the demand for change of seat. No one can order me on this. Both EPS and OPS have been Chief Ministers. Both had jointly led the AIADMK after the death of J Jayalalithaa but earlier this year both made their internal battle public.
EPS alleges that the OPS and their supporters have been expelled from the party
Yesterday, while talking to reporters outside the Assembly, the EPS claimed that the Speaker of the Assembly did not comply with the majority decision of the AIADMK choosing RB Udayakumar in place of the OPS as the deputy leader of the party. The EPS alleged that the OPS and their supporters have been expelled from the party. The Speaker of the Assembly seems to be acting on the suggestion of the ruling DMK.
Amidst the uproar in the assembly on Tuesday, the OPS sat peacefully next to the EPS. During the Question Hour, which raised public issues, the Speaker of the Assembly forbade the EPS faction to take up the internal fight of the AIADMK. He told the EPS that he would get an opportunity to raise the issue later, but the Leader of the Opposition did not agree to the EPS.
