Goa elections: AAP names Amit Palekar as its CM face

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has projected Amit Palekar as the chief ministerial candidate in Goa for the state legislative assembly elections. The party’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal formally announced the party’s decision in Goa on Wednesday.

Palekar, a noted lawyer and social worker, hails from the OBC Bhandari community. He was recently in the news for his hunger strike to protest illegal construction at an Old heritage site.

The 46-year-old, who joined AAP this October, is the party’s candidate from the St Cruz Assembly constituency currently represented by the BJP.

Kejriwal said that the party will be contesting all the 40 Assembly seats in Goa. AAP failed to win a single seat in the 2017 elections despite running an ambitious campaign, pitching 39 candidates for a 40-seat strong assembly.

Assembly polls in Goa will see the participation of BJP, Congress, Goa Forward Party (GFP), Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Trinamool Congress, and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Goa will go to the polls on 14 February and the counting of votes will take place on 10 March. AAP has already announced its chief ministerial candidate for the assembly elections in Punjab and Uttarakhand.
