In the BJP Legislature Party meeting, the name of Himanta Biswa Sarma has been agreed. The next CM will be the same. Sarwanand Sonowal and BJP MLA Nandita Garsola had named his name, which was agreed by the other MLAs.
Narendra Singh Tomar told the press conference that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal proposed the name of Sarma and BJP state party president Ranjit Kumar Das and newly elected MLA from Haflong Nandita Garlosa supported the proposal. Since no other name has been proposed, ‘Sarma has been unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party’.
Tomar said that the BJP would soon hold a meeting with its coalition partners of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United People’s Party Liberals (UPPL).
The AGP Legislature Party also held a meeting on Sunday. The party announced that it would support the leader elected by the BJP Legislature Party.
The BJP has won 60 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly, while its coalition partner Assam Gana Parishad has won nine and the United People’s Party Liberal has won six seats.
The BJP did not announce its chief ministerial candidate before the election. In such a situation, the BJP high command called Sarbananda Sonowal and Hemant Biswa Sarma to Delhi for a decision on the new Chief Minister. The two leaders had several meetings yesterday in Delhi with BJP President JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, who joined hands with Kamal after his differences with the Congress in 2015, says he resigned from all departments of the Congress party after political differences with former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Joined the party.
Ahead of the 2016 assembly elections, Biswa Sarma was seen as a strong contender for the post of chief minister, but the party made Sonowal the CM of the state after hoisting the victory.
