ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Ind vs Pak: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony on Saturday, following the BJP’s failure to secure a clear majority in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. Tharoor announced that he would be watching the India-Pakistan cricket match instead of attending the ceremony, as he had not been invited.
“I have not been invited to the swearing-in, so I’ll be watching the (India vs Pakistan) match,” Tharoor stated. The match is scheduled to take place on June 9 at around 8 PM IST in the United States, coinciding with Modi’s swearing-in ceremony set for 7:15 PM IST.
As PM Modi prepares to take the oath as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term, several leaders and heads of state from the neighboring region and the Indian Ocean region have been invited as distinguished guests. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the attendance of prominent figures including:
- President of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe
- President of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu
- Vice-President of Seychelles, Ahmed Afif
- Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina
- Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth
- Prime Minister of Nepal, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’
- Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay
Tharoor also commented on the significance of inviting the Maldives despite recent controversies, expressing confidence in the potential meeting between Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu and Prime Minister Modi following the ceremony. He noted that the invitation to neighboring countries, excluding Pakistan, sends a clear signal.
