Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Sunday said he has spoken to a BJP ideologue about Union Minister Kiren Rijiju’s criticism of Jawaharlal Nehru on the Kashmir issue. It is one thing to defame Nehru, but the then ruler Hari Singh is being projected as a benevolent hero, he said.
Rijiju had said Nehru’s “mistakes” of invoking Article 370 and taking the dispute with Pakistan to the United Nations did a lot of damage. Depleted the country’s resources and terrorism took thousands of lives including soldiers and civilians.
Without naming the ‘BJP ideologue’, the senior Congress leader said, ‘BJP ideologue’ sent me this message. The strange thing is..It is one thing to defame Nehru, but Hari Singh is projected as an honest and generous hero. Hari Singh was the last ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. He had signed the Instrument of Accession to India.
Rijiju wrote an article for a portal citing ‘five Nehruvian blunders’, including pushing the idea of a plebiscite and terming the accession of Jammu and Kashmir as provisional. The minister had said that to make a new future, it is necessary to realize the mistakes of the past. Rijiju said that he has not distorted history, but told facts to correct the record.
,The Congress on Saturday demanded Rijiju’s apology for criticizing Nehru on the Kashmir issue and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop making “irresponsible statements” to ministers.
Criticizing Rijiju, Congress leader Anand Sharma had said, ‘Kiren Rijiju has no knowledge of history. They should get the information.’
