JDU Meet: JD(U) National Executive Meeting Pushes for Special Category Status for Bihar

JDU Meet– The Janata Dal (United) held its national executive meeting in Delhi on Saturday, with party supremo and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar renewing efforts to secure special category status for the state, sources revealed.

The timing of this renewed push is significant, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP depends on support from Kumar’s JD(U), which holds 12 seats in the recently elected Lok Sabha, to sustain its majority at the Centre.

Key Decisions from the Meeting

Chaired by Kumar, the meeting saw key decisions and demands articulated by the party’s leadership. All JD(U) MPs, including Union ministers and senior party leaders, attended the meeting. Notably, Sanjay Jha, the party’s Rajya Sabha MP, was elected as the JD(U) working president.

Special Category Status for Bihar

The central focus of the meeting was the long-standing demand for special category status for Bihar. Party insiders disclosed that this demand was prominently featured in the political proposal presented during the meeting. The JD(U) also plans to seek a special financial package for the state.

This push comes in the wake of a resolution passed by the Bihar Cabinet last year, which also demanded special status for the state.

Historical Context and Economic Implications

Bihar’s politicians, including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, have consistently advocated for special category status, arguing that the state’s economic backwardness justifies such a designation. Achieving special category status would increase Bihar’s share of tax revenues from the Centre, providing a significant boost to its economic development.

Political Significance

The demand for special category status is not only an economic issue but also holds substantial political weight. With the JD(U) being a crucial ally of the BJP at the Centre, Kumar’s renewed call for special status could influence political negotiations and alignments.

As the JD(U) continues to push for this status, the central government’s response will be closely watched, given the potential impact on Bihar’s development and the political dynamics within the ruling coalition.
