JNU sedition case begins hearing on March 15, summons issued to 9 people including Kanhaiya Kumar

Kanhaiya Kumar, former president of Jawaharlal Nehru University, has been summoned by a Delhi court on 15 March for the sedition case. In this case, the Delhi Police was allowed to go to the charge sheet only last year. Apart from Kanhaiya Kumar, the court has also sent summons to nine other accused. The police have claimed in their charge sheet that on 9 February 2016, on the anniversary of the Parliament attack accused Afzal Guru, anti-national slogans were raised at the JNU campus under the leadership of Kanhaiya Kumar.

Taking cognizance of the charge sheet against nine people including Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya, Dr. Pankaj Sharma, Judge, Patiala House Court said, “On 27 February last year, the Home Department of Delhi Police allowed the filing of the Charsheet was. On 27 February 2020, the Kejriwal government gave permission to the Delhi Police to prosecute the JNU case. The Delhi government, in its order, said that after observing the charge sheet issued by the Delhi Police, it was found that these accused had committed an offense under sections 124A and 120B of the IPC. It is known that both these sections are related to treason and criminal conspiracy.

At a rally for the Delhi Assembly elections on February 5 last year, Home Minister Amit Shah said that if the BJP got the vote, it would approve the trial against Kumar and Khalid and Sharjeel Imam within one hour of forming the government. After this, on 27 February, the AAP government led by Arvind Kejriwal allowed the police to prosecute the accused.
